Scientists Developing Human Heart-Powered Nano-Batteries

The human heartbeat could be used to power an ipod after scientists developed a tiny chip which uses the body's own movement to generate power.
Scientists hope that as the nanotechnology used in the chip evolves, it could lead to electronics which don't require batteries or mains power.
Hailed as a milestone, it can use tiny movements such as the pinch of a finger to generate power.
The team, presenting their findings at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, have used it to..

What to do in an Earthquake - Good advice (Photos)

'My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.'

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON            'THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by..

First Artificial Sperm a Success

FOR the first time viable mouse sperm have been grown outside the testes. If the technique can be repeated with human sperm, it could lead to new ways of treating infertile men.
Takuya Sato at Yokohama City University in Japan and colleagues extracted germ cells from the testes of newborn mice that had not yet begun producing sperm. They placed the cells in agarose gel soaked in nourishing chemicals and hormones such as fetal bovine serum and testosterone. The team had first engineered the mice so that..

"Zombie" Ants Found With New Mind-Control Fungi

A stalk of the newfound fungus species Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani, grows out of a "zombie" ant's head in a Brazilian rain forest.
Originally thought to be a single species, called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the fungus is actually four distinct species—all of which can "mind control" ants—scientists announced.
The fungus species can infect an ant, take over its brain, and then kill the insect once it moves to a location ideal for the fungi to grow and spread their spores.
All four known fungi species..

Sarkozy Threatens Arabs with Death and Destruction

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has warned all Arab rulers that they risk Libya-type intervention if they cross a certain line of violence against their own people.
The president told press at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday (24 March) that UN Security Council resolution 1973 authorising air strikes on Libya has created a legal and political precedent on the “responsibility to protect.”
Referring to deadly violence in Syria, he explained: “Every ruler should understand, and especially every Arab ruler should understand that the reaction of the international community and of Europe will from this moment on each time be the same: we will be on the side of peaceful protesters who must not be repressed with violence.”

Sunspots and Human Behavior

Borderland Sciences has been investigating the relationship of the Sun and human behaviour for many years, and we are quite confident that we can predict behaviours based on sunspot fluctuations over very short and long durations within the Solar Cycle of 11 years. Historically, research has been conducted to link the 11 year cycle of the sun to changes in human behavior and society. The most famous research had been done by professor A.L. Tchijevsky, a Russian scientist, who presented a paper to the American Meteorological Society at Philadelphia in the late 19th century. He prepared a study of the history of mass human movement compared to the solar cycle, beginning with the division of the Solar cycle into four parts: 1) Minimum sunspot activity; 2) increasing sunspot activity; 3) maximum sunspot activity; 4) Decreasing sunspot activity. He then divided up the agitation of mass human movements into five phases: ..

Visualizing The Facebook

This is what the world looks like, according to the Facebook social graph.
Facebook intern Paul Butler was interested in the locations of friendships, so he decided to create a visualization of Facebook connections around the globe. How local are our friends? Where are the highest concentration of friendships? How do political and geological boundaries affect them?
Butler started by using a sample of 10 million friend pairs, correlated them with their current cities and then mapped that data using the longitude and latitude of each city.
That was the easy part..

Blood test to predict diabetes 10 years earlier

A blood test that could predict those at risk of getting diabetes 10 years earlier than current diagnosis has been developed by scientists.
The test can identify around half of people who will develop type 2 diabetes said researchers speaking at the British Science Festival in Birmingham.
It works by detecting levels of a genetic molecule in their blood, it was claimed.
The same molecule, called a microRNA (MiR), could help pinpoint sufferers at high risk of heart and artery disease.
Amongst the two million people in Britain who already have diabetes, the test can also distinguish between those who..

The shores of Acapulco's beaches were this weekend teeming with masses of fish packed so tightly they looked like an oil slick from above.
Thousands of sardines, anchovies, stripped bass and mackerel surged along the coast of the Mexican resort in an event believed to be linked to the devastating Japanese tsunami.
Experts couldn't be sure.
'It would fall into that category where you would love to make the connection, but who knows?' said Rich Briggs, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Massive UFO event in Russia: Crashed flying saucer?

A UFO event of Roswell proportions has taken place in Russia and is being ignored by Western media. On March 1 in the Irkutsk region of Siberia, a huge object, glowing pink and blue according to some accounts, was seen by thousands of locals as it hurtled towards Earth. An enormous explosion was then heard over a wide area. Curious and frightened residents inundated various police and rescue departments with phone calls. The military soon confirmed that it had not been doing any exercises in the area and..

Libya, Hypocrisy and Betrayal by the United Nations

The bombing of Libya will begin on or nearly to the day, of the eighth anniversary of the beginning of the destruction of Iraq, 20th March, in Europe. Libya too will be destroyed - its schools, education system, water, infrastructure, hospitals, municipal buildings. There will be numerous "tragic mistakes", "collateral damage", mothers, fathers, children, babies, grandparents, blind and deaf schools and on and on. And the wonders of the Roman remains and earlier, largely enduring and revered in all history's turmoils as Iraq, the nation's history - and humanity's, again as Iraq and Afghanistan, will be gone, for ever.

The infrastructure will be destroyed. The embargo will remain in place, thus rebuilding will be impossible. Britain, France and the US., will decide the country needs "stabilising", "help with reconstruction." They will move in, secure the oil installations and..

Video: Did you know that flying snakes exist?

There are five species of flying snake, genus Chrysopelea, located mainly in Southeast Asia. Flying snakes are actually gliders. They climb up to a tree branch, launch themselves into the air, and then flatten out their bodies to twice the normal width while they suck in their stomachs to make a concave shape, similar to the cross-section of a Frisbee. While in the air, flying snakes wriggle their bodies in a lateral undulation, like how rattlesnakes travel through sand, to enhance their gliding capability. And in fact, flying snakes are..

NASA's plan to clean up space junk using ground Laser

NASA is tired of all that space junk that’s orbiting our planet. The myriad of broken satellites and other junk orbiting poses a hazard to functioning satellites that are in orbit. A tiny little chunk of anything traveling at orbital speeds is enough to destroy a satellite and possibly harm any spacecraft or astronauts that are in the way.
NASA scientists are now conducting a study that Dr. Evil would approve of. They’re looking at the possibility of using a ground-based laser to clean up the debris. The space agency says..

Studies say any alcohol is good for you...but in moderation!

American researchers studied 1,824 people between the ages of 55 and 65, grouping those who enjoyed one or two drinks a day and those who completely avoided alcohol. When researchers checked on them 20 years later, they found that abstainers had a more than two times increased mortality rate than moderate drinkers.
Study after study has shown that moderate drinking is good for your health. But the question that remains is why? How could ingesting a substance that can kill human cells be good for you?
Scientists say that more research needs to be done to understand why alcohol may be beneficial in small doses. Most commonly, evidence shows that alcohol is associated with increased cardiovascular health. Researchers at the University of Calgary recently analyzed data on alcohol consumption and heart disease and determined that..

Mysterious Cracks Appear Across the Planet?

Scientists do not know what to think about: South America is bursting at the seams. In southern Peru, suddenly appeared a huge crack length of 3 km and a width of about 100 meters. Anomaly occurred in the district Huakullani Chukuito province near the famous Lake Titicaca. A crack has appeared almost immediately: the earth like a burst at the site of a large tension, the far scattered huge chunks of soil.
Interestingly, the crack did not appear in the earthquake. In general, there was no catastrophe, the earth simply gone. The crack occurred..

Coffee is good for women, but bad for men..

A new study from the UK suggests that women who drink coffee may perform better in stressful situations than those on decaffeinated beverages. For men, it's the opposite.
Psychologist Dr Lindsay St Claire and colleagues from Bristol University decided to find out the effects of caffeinated coffee in high stress situations such as in the work place. They divided 64 coffee-drinking volunteers into pairs of the same-sex and similar ages. They then gave them a number of tasks to complete such as memory tests, puzzles, and negotiating tasks. To increase the pressure they told the pairs they would be making a public presentation on their results.
The pairs were then given decaffeinated coffee to drink, but..

TREEPODS: Carbon-Scrubbing Artificial Trees for Boston City Streets

Trees naturally filter and clean our air, but in today’s heavily polluted world, it’s just too huge of a task to expect Mother Nature to take care of herself. Taking this into account, designers Mario Caceres and Cristian Canonico have designed a set of beautiful air-filtering trees for the SHIFTboston urban intervention contest. Called TREEPODS, the designs harnesses biomimicry to efficiently emulate the carbon filtration qualities of trees.
The TREEPOD systems are capable of removing carbon dioxide from the air and releasing oxygen using a carbon dioxide removal process called “humidity swing,”. In addition to their air-cleansing abilities, TREEPODS will also..

Piers Corbyn: Massive Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Were Triggered by Solar Action

Meteorologist, astrophysicist, consultant, and owner of the business Weather Action, Piers Corbyn, talks with Alex about the Japanese tsunami.
Piers says “The massive Japan Earthquake and Tsunami were triggered by massive events on the Sun and there are more to come in the next two years”
He Says:
• “The Earthquake was preceded by an X class solar flare and a significant hit of the Earth by a Coronal Mass Ejection – reported by nasa – http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sunearth/news/News031011-xclass.html
“We warned after the New Zealand Earthquake on 21 Feb that the solar-lunar scene is set for more Earthquakes for the next two years:

City Of Atlantis Found Near Spain?

City Of Atlantis Found. The city of Atlantis might be found by a U.S.-led research team in mud flats in southern Spain. The mystery of the legendary metropolis that was covered by a tsunami thousands of years ago might be solved. To solve the age-old mystery, the team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site just north of Cadiz, Spain. There, buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park, they believe that they pinpointed the ancient, multi-ringed dominion known as Atlantis.
“This is the power of tsunamis,” head researcher Richard Freund told Reuters.
“It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that’s pretty much what we’re talking about,” said Freund, a University of Hartford, Connecticut, professor who lead an international team searching for the true site of Atlantis.
The team of archeologists and geologists in 2009 and 2010 used a..

Are we watching a new Chernobyl?

THE world is waiting to see if Japan has avoided a nuclear catastrophe as the crisis from Friday's earthquake and tsunami worsens. With a confirmed death toll of more than 1000 and at least 10,000 unaccounted for from the biggest earthquake in its recorded history, Japanese authorities were desperately trying to avoid a nuclear meltdown while reassuring citizens the situation was under control.
But some US nuclear physicists have warned we might be watching another Chernobyl.
The international community has leapt to Japan's aid while simultaneously watching with growing concern at developments at Fukushima atomic power plants No.1 and 2, some 240km northeast of Tokyo.
Tokyo Electric Power technicians worked into the night, announcing yesterday that..

British plans to strip Gaddafi of oil revenue

Britain is studying plans to take billions of dollars of Libyan oil revenues away from Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime and place them under the control of the United Nations.
William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, has told MPs that he is considering the case for international action to divert oil revenues into an escrow account that would be administered by the UN on behalf of the Libyan people.
The plan, similar to the oil-for-food system imposed on Saddam Hussein's Iraq after the first Gulf War, would require the UN Security Council to invoke its powers under Chapter VII of the UN charter.
Mr Hague said he was looking at the plan as..

World to see biggest full moon in two decades

The world is set to experience the biggest full moon for almost two decades when the satellite reaches its closest point to Earth next weekend.
On 19 March, the full moon will appear unusually large in the night sky as it reaches a point in its cycle known as 'lunar perigee'.
Stargazers will be treated to a spectacular view when the moon approaches Earth at a distance of 221,567 miles in its elliptical orbit - the closest it will have passed to our planet since 1992.
The full moon could appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter in the sky, especially when it rises on the eastern horizon at sunset or is provided with the right atmospheric conditions.
This phenomenon has reportedly heightened concerns about 'supermoons' being linked to..

Apples hold the secret of longer life?

An apple a day could keep the undertaker away. Scientists have linked the fruit with a longer life – at least in flies.
Fruit flies, which share many genes with humans despite their tiny size, were either fed normally or had an apple extract added.
Those fed normally lived an average of 50 days – five days fewer than those whose food was supplemented with apple, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports.
Not only did the flies given the apple extract live ten per cent longer, they also found it easier to walk, climb and move about as they aged.
The apple extract also cut levels of various biochemicals found in older fruit flies and linked to age-related deterioration.
The researchers, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, believe that..

Subway Passes McDonald's

It's official: the Subway sandwich chain has surpassed McDonald's Corp.  as the world's largest restaurant chain, in terms of units.
At the end of last year, Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide, compared to McDonald's 32,737. The burger giant disclosed its year-end store count in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing late last month.
The race for global dominance is an important one for an industry that's mostly saturated in the U.S. High unemployment and economic uncertainty have battered the restaurant industry in the U.S., and chains are increasingly looking overseas for growth, particularly in Asia.
