Η κυβέρνηση σχεδιάζει την κατασκευή φράχτη στον Έβρο για να εμποδίσει την εισροή μεταναστών, αποκάλυψε ο υπουργός Προστασίας του Πολίτη, Χρήστος Παπουτσής, σε συνέντευξή του στο πρακτορείο ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ.
"Έχουμε ένα συνολικό σχεδιασμό που υλοποιούμε αυτή την περίοδο. Όπως, η συνεργασία με τον ευρωπαϊκό οργανισμό Frontex για τη φύλαξη των συνόρων. Σχεδιάζουμε επίσης την αναβάθμιση και τον εκσυγχρονισμό της Ελληνικής Ακτοφυλακής και στα χερσαία σύνορα τη δημιουργία ενός φράχτη για την αποτροπή των παράνομων μεταναστών", δήλωσε ο υπουργός.
Αντίστοιχο φράχτη έχουν σηκώσει οι ΗΠΑ στα σύνορα με το Μεξικό, ενώ υπό κατασκευή είναι και ο φράχτης που θα χωρίζει το Ισραήλ από την Αίγυπτο.

What a father includes in his diet passes down and is able to reprogram how genes function in his children.
It's already been established that a woman's diet can affect a baby's health, but it now appears that mothers aren't the only ones. What a father eats can have an impact on his children's health, too. 
A new study published in Cell shows that environmental cues, including diet, influence genes in mammals from one generation to the next, suggesting paternal environmental effects may play a more important role in complex diseases such as diabetes and heart disease than previously believed.
“Knowing what your parents were doing before you were conceived is turning out to be important in determining what disease risk factors you may be carrying,” says Oliver Rando, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular pharmacology at the University of Massaschusetts, and coauthor of the study with Hans Hofmann, associate professor of integrative biology at the University of Texas at Austin.

Iran Guards shoot down two 'Western spy' drones

TEHRAN — Iran's Revolutionary Guards have shot down two "Western spy" drones in the Gulf, the Fars news agency quoted a top commander of the elite military force as saying on Sunday.
"Westerners have a series of capabilities which cannot be ignored, especially satellites, or for example they have spy planes which can take pictures in some places," Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the air force wing of the Guards said.
He said that the drones were mainly being used in Iraq and Afghanistan but "some violations against our soil" have also occurred.
"And we have so far downed many of their advanced spy planes. In the Persian Gulf, we have downed two of their planes and this is the first time that we are saying it," Hajizadeh said without specifying when exactly the drones were shot down.
He also boasted that all "enemy" bases in the region were within range of Iranian missiles, referring to arch-foe the United States. He said that even the aircraft carriers deployed in the region were no longer a threat to Iran.

Britain forms plan for Gulf evacuation in event of war with Iran

 

The British armed forces are drawing up contingency plans to evacuate hundreds of thousands of British residents and tourists from Dubai and other Gulf cities in the event of war with Iran.  

The Coalition government under David Cameron ordered an immediate review of British military planning in the Gulf after the election last May. The Daily Telegraph can reveal that new proposals are being drawn up to coordinate military activity in the region with local allies hostile to Iran, particularly the United Arab Emirates.  

Planners have realised they had to tear up existing emergency plans for local British residents. Since the previous review in the 1990s, the expatriate population has grown to more than 100,000 in the UAE alone, while a million British tourists, from businessmen on stopovers to England footballers with marital problems, come to Dubai every year.

China's New Stealth Fighter Revealed

The first clear pictures of what appears to be a Chinese stealth fighter prototype have been published online, highlighting China's military buildup just days before US Defense Secretary Robert Gates heads to Bejiing to try to repair defense ties, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The photographs, published on several unofficial defense-related websites, appear to show a J-20 prototype making a high-speed taxi test -- usually one of the last steps before an aircraft makes its first flight -- according to experts on aviation and China's military.
The exact origin of the photographs is unclear, although they appear to have been taken at the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute, where the J-20 is in development, in western China.
A few experts have suggested the pictured aircraft is a mock-up, rather than a functioning prototype of a stealth fighter -- so-called because it is designed to evade detection by radar and infrared sensors.
But a majority of experts consulted say they believe the pictures and the aircraft are authentic, giving the strongest indication yet that Beijing is making faster-than-expected progress in developing a rival to the US F-22 -- the world's only fully operational stealth fighter.

More of the world's top scientists in the disciplines of geology, ecology, meteorology, astrophysics, and heliology [pdf list] are predicting that the two major cooling cycles are converging - the short term and long term Ice Ages - and Earth has just entered the beginnings of the dangerous cooling.
Both cooling periods are due and both seem to have started just as the sun's about to reach its solar maximum. When the sun goes quiet after 2012, it's expected to stay quiet for at least the next 30 to 50 years. During that time, the sun will generate significantly less heat and the planets - including Earth - will cool rapidly.

Biometric ID check on Scots schoolchildren as young as four ...

DOZENS of Scottish schools have introduced “intrusive” biometric systems, such as fingerprinting, to identify pupils as young as four.

New figures show 68 schools are now using  technology to manage meals, control library books and even allow access to toilets. 

Almost two-thirds are primaries, where fingerprinting and palm recognition can be used to identify young children.

And another 10 schools in Midlothian have the capability for biometric ID but are not yet using it.

Yesterday, critics said the extent which the technology was being used in Scotland’s schools was “worrying”.

Dead Birds Fall From Sky In Sweden, Millions Of Dead Fish Found In Maryland, Brazil, New Zealand

Wildlife officials say that hundreds of dead birds were found in Kentucky last week. Millions of dead fish surfaced in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay in the U.S., Tuesday, while similar unexplained mass fish deaths occurred across the world in Brazil and New Zealand. On Wednesday, 50 birds were found dead on a street in Sweden. The news come after recents reports of mysrerious massive bird and fish deaths days prior in Arkansas and Louisiana.
The Baltimore Sun reports that an estimated 2 million  fish were found dead in the Chesapeake Bay, mostly adult spot with some juvenile croakers in the mix, as well. Maryland Department of the Environment spokesperson Dawn Stoltzfus says "cold-water stress" is believed to be the culprit. Eat And Drink Like The Greeks To Maintain Mental Sharpnes

People who eat and drink like the Greeks may think a little more clearly into old age, hints a new study.
The findings add to a handful of evidence that a Mediterranean-style diet may be as good for the brain as it is for the rest of the body.
Traditionally associated with the consumption of a lot of wine, fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil and fish -- and with very little red meat -- the Mediterranean way of eating has been credited with helping to prevent various ailments, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes, lead researcher Christine Tangney of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago told Reuters Health in an e-mail.
To determine if slower brain aging might join the diet's list of potential health benefits, Tangney and her colleagues looked at the dietary habits and cognitive function of nearly 4,000 Midwesterners aged 65 and older.

China And Russia To Launch Mars Probe In 2011

China, working jointly with Russia, plans to launch its first Mars probe in October after a two-year delay, state media reported on Sunday.
Yinghuo-1 was due to blast off in October 2009 along with Russia’s “Phobos Explorer” from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan but the launch was postponed, Xinhua news agency said.
The journey to Mars is scheduled to take about ten months. The spacecraft will then spend several months studying the planet and its moons from orbit, before landing on Phobos. The current timeline is for arrival in October 2012 and landing in February 2013.The media report, quoting an anonymous expert at China Academy of Space Technology, said the launch was pushed back to October 2011. It also reported that China plans to launch a Mars probe on its own in 2013.

Massive Natural Gas Field Found of Israel’s Coast

A gigantic natural gas field that could yield millions of barrels of oil was recently discovered on the maritime border between Israel, Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, Cyprus, and Northern Cyprus. 
While it is one of the world's richest natural gas reserves, the Levant Basin Province is located between countries with endless amounts of mutual hatred. It straddles the sea borders of Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The largest section discovered so far, the Leviathan gas field, is believed to possibly contain, alongside natural gas, 4.2 billion barrels of oil. Leviathan straddles the Israeli-Lebanese maritime border. Israel is currently in a state of war with Lebanon and does not recognize the de-facto Hamas Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip.

Fruit and vegetables do not reduce overall cancer risk

Reducing smoking and alcohol consumption is a far better way to avoid cancer than eating large quantities of fruit and vegetables

Eating lots of fruit and vegetables will do little to reduce your risk of developing cancer, according to a review of a decade of research involving more than a million people. It concluded that maintaining a healthy weight and cutting down on smoking and drinking are far better ways to ward off the disease.
Vegetables and fruit are important for a healthy diet but the review says that eating increased amounts does not seem to offer much protection against cancer.
"There's strong scientific evidence to show that, after smoking, being overweight and alcohol are two of the biggest cancer risks," said Tim Key, an epidemiologist from Oxford University, who wrote the review.
In an article published today in the British Journal of Cancer, Key summarised the epidemiological evidence from more than a million people taking part in several dozen long-term research projects looking at the amount of fruit and vegetables people eat and their overall cancer risk. He also studied specific cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, lung and breast.

SETI Claims Three Giant Spaceships Headed Towards Earth?

Three giant spaceships are heading towards Earth. The largest one of them is 240 kilometers wide. Two others are smaller. At present, the objects are beyond the orbit of Pluto.

It is about time science should say its word regarding the problem, and it did. SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), an independent non-commercial organization, released a sensational statement.

The spaceships were detected by HAARP search system. The system, based in Alaska, was designed to study the phenomenon of northern lights. According to SETI researchers, the objects are nothing but extraterrestrial spaceships. They will be visible in optical telescopes as soon as they reach Mars's orbit. The US government has been reportedly informed about the event. The ships will reach Earth in December 2012.
