U.S. House of Representatives Recognizes Battle of Marathon as Extremely Significant
The United States House of Representatives passed Resolution 1704. It was introduced by Democratic legislator James McGovern from Massachussetts, last September. The Resolution recognizes that the Athenian warriors of the Battle of Marathon, in 490 B.C, is one of the most significant battles of the human history. It defeated the numerically powerful Persian invaders that attacked them. This victory contributed to the establishment of the newly formed democratic regime. The foundation of the U.S.A. several years later, was based on the basic principles of democracy. The Resolution was passed by a vote of 359 to 44, on December 8th, 2010.
