Michio Kaku Warns Cities Of Enormous Pending Earthquakes

Michio Kaku

Physicist and author of "Physics of the Future" Michio Kaku warned world citizens this morning on Good Morning America about the pending threat of enormous earthquakes.
"In our life time, we could very well see one of these cities destroyed," Kaku said. "Los Angeles, San Francisco, Mexico City, Tehran, Tokyo."
Kaku pointed to changes in the physical structures of human civilization, and how the new composure poses many risks. "We are creating mega cities where there used to be fishing villages," he said.
About the many disasters this year, he said: "Well, look at the Chilean earthquake. You realize it was so big it actually rocked the planet earth. The axis of the earth shifted 3 inches as a result of that 8.8 earthquake. The day is no longer 24 hours, it's been shortened by one micro-second, That's how big that earthquake was."

Frog Rides a Snake to Escape Floods in Australia

Sure, they've had their differences in the past, but when times are tough even frogs and snakes can share in a little cold-blooded solidarity. Amid the devastating floods in Queensland, Australia, computer technician Armin Gerlach spotted an unusual sight -- a frog riding atop the surface of the water on the back of a snake as the pair sought out solid ground. It's hard not to be inspired by the cooperative duo, particularly considering that snakes are quite fond of eating frogs, and vice versa.

Wearing The Same Pair Of Jeans For 15 Months

Good news: Turns out that wearing the same pair of jeans every day isn't hazardous to your health.
University of Alberta student Josh Le wore one pair of tight, raw denim jeans for 15 months starting in Sept. 2009. At the end of his trial, he and his professor, Rachel McQueen, found that the most bacteria accumulated in the crotch area of the jeans -- 8,500 to 10,000 bacterial units per square centimeter -- but overall, the pants were still safe to wear.
McQueen said that the bacteria levels in the jeans were similar post-wash and pre-wash.

Egypt Government Has Shut Down The Internet

Internet access in Egypt appears to have been completely cut off by the government as protests continue in the country.
Almost all access into and out of the country has been cut off tonight.
"According to our analysis, 88% of the 'Egyptian internet' has fallen off the internt," said Andree Toonk at BGPmon, an internet connectivity monitoring site.
All of the major ISPs in the country seem to be almost completely offline, in an action unprecedented in Internet history.
Previously, social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter were blocked.
"In this case the government seems to be taking a shotgun approach by ordering ISPs to stop routing all networks," said Toonk.

Super Bedbugs Are invading Cities Around The World

  • Bedbugs becoming more resistant to sprays
  • Resurgence of the bugs "an urgent situation"
  • Infestations increasing in Australia, the US

Blood-sucking bedbugs are one thousand times more resistant to common pesticides compared to a decade ago and are invading cities around the world, scientists have warned.
Researchers from Ohio, US, made the surprising discovery when building a genetic map of the pests, which are about the size of an apple seed, and have warned of future infestations.
"The resurgence of bed bugs poses an urgent situation as infestations are rampant globally, nationally, and locally," the researchers wrote in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE.

China to create largest mega city in the world with 42 million people

A city twice the size of Wales and 26 times the size of London. In China it's not just possible, it's being planned.
China is planning to create the world's biggest mega city by merging nine cities to create a metropolis twice the size of Wales with a population of 42 million.
City planners in south China have laid out an ambitious plan to merge together the nine cities that lie around the Pearl River Delta.
The "Turn The Pearl River Delta Into One" scheme will create a 16,000 sq mile urban area that is 26 times larger geographically than Greater London, or twice the size of Wales.
The new mega-city will cover a large part of China's manufacturing heartland, stretching from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and including Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing. Together, they account for nearly a tenth of the Chinese economy.

Please Give Me One Million Dollars

Sometimes, all you have to do is ask!
Craig Rowin a 26-year-old New York native took to the internet last November with a simple plea: “Please give me one million dollars.”
Craig Rowin will no longer be asking millionaires for one million dollars. Why? Because one millionaire from New York  has agreed to give him a check for one million dollars.
As Rowin announced today via YouTube, he has reached an agreement; “He will give me one million dollars and I will owe him nothing in return.” It will be given to Craig live on stage at the UCB Theatre in New York City, on Wednesday, February 2nd at 8pm.

Child Flu Vaccine Contains Mercury

UP to a million under-fives have been inoculated against the flu virus with a controversial vaccine containing poisonous mercury.
Pandemrix has been given to almost a quarter of all healthy babies and young children as well as thousands of older children with health problems.
Inquiries by the Sunday Express reveal it contains a preservative made with a form of mercury that was phased out of childhood vaccines in 2004 after fears about its safety.
The preservative, called thimerosal, has been linked with autism and developmental disorders in children and was withdrawn from childhood vaccines in the United States and parts of Europe 10 years ago.
Yet the UK government has always insisted there is no persuasive evidence it poses a health risk. When it was withdrawn, Labour health minister Rosie Winterton said the move was part of “a global goal to minimise environmental exposure to mercury”.

Designs drawn up of what could be $1B yacht

The 500-ft. ‘Streets of Monaco’ yacht boasts designs of a mini-Monaco on the top deck
There’s buzz overseas about what could possibly be the world’s first billion dollar yacht. A UK yacht designer, Yacht Island Design, has drawn plans for a four-level, 500-ft. city on the sea called “Streets of Monaco,” which is being modeled after the European enclave, a space for millionaires and billionaires alike.
On the top deck, there will be scaled-down versions of uber famous Monaco landmarks like the Hotel de Paris, Monte Carlo Casino, Café de Paris, Loews Hotel, and La Rascasse. The real pinchers are a fully-functional go-kart circuit track based on the Monoco Grand Prix race track, complete with a tunnel complex, and the submarine and helipad. And not to mention, the standard multiple swimming pools, swim-in Jacuzzi bar, multi-use sports court for tennis and basketball, dance hall, spa and hair salon, and accommodations for 16 guests and 70 staff members. The main apartment for the yacht owner is spread over three floors and covers 4,800 sq. ft.

Fluoride Toxin So Dangerous - Even CDC Now Warns Against Consumption by Infants

A new study has found that the protective shield fluoride forms on teeth is up to 100 times thinner than previously believed. This raises questions about how this renowned cavity-fighter really works.
It has long been believed that fluoride changes the main mineral in tooth enamel, hydroxyapatite, into a more-decay resistant material called fluorapatite. But the new research found that the fluorapatite layer formed in this way is only 6 nanometers thick -- meaning it would take almost 10,000 such layers to span the width of a human hair. According to Science Daily:
"The scientists question whether a layer so thin, which is quickly worn away by ordinary chewing, really can shield teeth from decay".
Another new study shows that exposure to fluoride may lower children's intelligence.  In addition to toothpaste, fluoride is added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies. PR Newswire reports:
"About 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence compared to only 8 percent in the 'high' fluoride area ... in the high-fluoride city, 15 percent had scores indicating mental retardation and only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city."

Thousands of dead octopuses wash up on Portugal beach

Thousands of octopuses have washed up on the shore of northern Portugal and scientists are stumped about why. They’re calling it an environmental disaster, and are issuing a rather strange warning.
They cover a 5-mile stretch of Vila Nova de Gaia beach - no reason has yet been found for their appearance. At this point, we don’t have much information, but we’ll keep an ear to the ground for what is going on.

Leao The Faithful Brazilian Dog

As the death toll from devastating flooding in Brazil continues to rise, a single picture drives home the sense of loss.
A photo of a Brazilian dog named Leao siting by his owner’s muddy grave in Teresopolis near Rio de Janeiro, has been creating a buzz on the blogosphere and touching the hearts of millions. Leao simply refuses to leave the graveside of his owner Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died during the catastrophic landslides that devastated Brazil last week. Sitting by his owner’s final resting place, Leao shows the entire world the meaning of loyalty.
Brazilians are bracing for more rain, fearing more landslides after waves of muddy water swallowed towns in the country's worst flood disaster on record.
At least 655 deaths were reported in a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state, northeast of the city of Rio.

Think And Behave Young, Stay Young

The key to looking young is to think and behave young, says a study. The study says, those  who think and dress in a youthful way are healthier than those who act their age, reports Daily Mail, London .Mind over matter, it seems, can improve everything from blood pressure to arthritis and eyesight.
Even the development of heart disease and cancer may, at least to a degree, be staved off by refusing to grow old gracefully. The intriguing claims come from researchers at Harvard University, who reviewed a series of studies into how the mind influences the body.
In one experiment, elderly men were ‘transported’ back to 1959 for a week. They lived in accommodation fitted out in the decor of the Fifties, were played TV shows and music of the time and told to talk and act as if they were living then.
By the end of the week, the men were perceived to look around three years younger. Their hearing and eyesight improved, arthritic joints were more flexible, muscles were stronger and minds sharper.
The experiment echoes the recent TV series The Young Ones, in which celebrities including Lionel Blair and Dickie Bird spent a week in a house fitted out in the style of 1975 – when they were in their prime. Blair, 79, said the ‘extraordinary’ experience gave him the mind of a 40-year-old and the body of a man 20 years his junior.
In the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science, researcher Ellen Langer suggests that much of the decline of old age may be driven by negative perceptions about our later years – and breaking these down can improve health.

Hawaii Governor: Actually, We Can’t Find Obama’s Original Birth Certificate…

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie suggested in an interview published today that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health. Abercrombie told the Honolulu Star Advertiser he was searching within the Hawaii Department of Health to find definitive vital records that would prove Obama was born in Hawaii, because the continuing eligibility controversy could hurt the president's chances of re-election in 2012.
Donalyn Dela Cruz, Abercrombie's spokeswoman in Honolulu, ignored again today another in a series of repeated requests made by WND for an interview with the governor.

Drinking beer can help you lose weight

Doctors have suggested that drinking up to a pint of beer a day is good for the health and can reduce the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.
They claimed that moderate consumption could even help people lose weight if combined with a healthy diet.
Doctors Ramon Estruch and Rosa Lamuela tested 1,249 men and women over 57 years old.
Those who accompanied a Mediterranean diet with up to a pint of beer 'not only did not put on weight, but in some cases even lost weight'.
The doctors found beer provides the same health benefits attributed to moderate consumption of wine.
"In this study we banish myths. We know that beer is not to blame for obesity," the Daily Mail quoted Dr Lamuela as saying.
Beer contains folic acid, vitamins, iron and calcium, which the study claims provide a 'protective' effect on the cardiovascular system.

PRAGUE — A cafe owner in the Czech capital Prague has devised an unconventional, but apparently successful, scheme to drum up business: scrapping the price list.
"I had no customers and couldn't attract new ones, so I got this idea. The place is mostly full these days," 42-year-old Ondrej Lebowski told AFP.
Now clients at his Big Lebowski bar are free to set their own price for drinks, food, and even some of the memorabilia inside including film posters, books, toys and chess boxes.
Lebowski launched his innovative bid to attract more custom last August. Five months on, curious customers are flocking to the cafe which would otherwise have gone bust.
"Customers try to arrive at the correct price, some give more, some give less," with most people doing their best to offer a fair amount rather than drinking and eating for free, Lebowski explained.

Woolly Mammoth Could Walk the Earth Again in 4 Years

A researcher from Japan plans to use a new cloning technique to make this happen
If you thought "Jurassic Park" and the large, reconstructed skeletons seen in museums were the closest we'd ever come to seeing extinct creatures come to life, you might want to think again.
Akira Iritani, a professor at Kyoto University in Japan, is looking to resurrect the woolly mammoth now that a new cloning technique can make it possible. Not only is it possible, but the woolly mammoth could also be reborn as soon as four years from now.
The woolly mammoth, which is an extinct species of mammoth that died out 5,000 years ago, has been difficult to clone up until now because nuclei in cells found in the muscle tissue and skin of woolly mammoth's located in the Siberian permafrost were severely damaged by the cold. Many attempts in the 1990's failed because of this.

Bono earns millions from Facebook

U2 star Bono's decision to invest in Facebook has paid off as his share in the social networking website is now worth $728 million.
The 50-year-old bought 1.5 per cent of the company for $195 million last year as the managing director of investment firm Elevation Partners.
And now his chunk is worth a massive $728 million after the website's value soared to $50 billion earlier this month.
Bono can cash in his share and claim a huge windfall when the privately-held website is floated on the stock exchange.
Facebook was founded seven years ago by Mark Zuckerberg, 26.

Everything Was a Lie! Astronomer Parke Kunkle Says Star Signs Out of Date

Wobble of the Earth
Astronomer says star signs out of date
Zodiac created more than 2000 years ago
Earth's "wobble" means constellations seen differently. If you're a regular follower of astrology you should know that your horoscope could well be 2000 years out of date.
The star signs we are used to are based on constellations observed by the ancient Babylonians two millennia ago.
Astronomers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society have found that the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth changed our planet's position in relation to its axis, making the original alignment of the stars, the basis for the zodiac signs, "off" by about a month. Thus, a thirteenth zodiac sign, Ophiuchus, was added to the original 12.
The debate has created a storm on the internet after Minnesota Planetarium Society board member Professor Parke Kunkle pointed out the potential problem.
"When [astrologers] say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces," he said.
Professor Kunkle says the phenomenon is the result of something called “precession” caused by the wobble of the Earth affecting how we see the distinctive patterns in the night sky.

Russian Architects Unveiled 'Ark Hotel' Concept (Photos)

It looks like a cross between Noah's Ark and something out of a 1970s science-fiction film.
The futuristic Ark Hotel has been designed to withstand floods caused by rising sea levels. The floating behemoth is a 'biosphere' conceived as a safe, self-contained haven in case of disaster.
Boasting a green, self-sustaining environment for guests, the shell-shaped hotel would withstand tidal waves and other natural disasters.
Architects say the Ark's shell-like construction of arches and cables evenly distribute weight so it is also invulnerable to earthquakes.

Mount Etna Volcano Erupts in Italy

More explosive eruptions may be on the way for famous Italian volcano.

Volcanic tremors at Mount Etna, on the Italian island, were detected around 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday. The tremors peaked the next morning and lava began erupting at the Southeast Crater, about 4,500 feet high. The crater pit overflowed with lava and ash plumes spewed into the air, which forced a local airport to halt service. The ash plumes had stopped after nearly 12 hours today, according to the Italian Institute of Vocanology, citing surveillance cameras observing Etna.
But more eruptions could be on the way.
"This eruption is very similar to more than 200 episodes of lava fountaining at the summit craters of Mount Etna — including 66 from the Southeast Crater in the year 2000," said Boris Behncke, a volcanologist and expert on Mount Etna. "The same vent that erupted last night already produced nearly identical — though longer-lasting — episodes in September and November 2007 and most recently on May 10, 2008."
Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe and one of the world's most well-known. While 2010 was an exceptionally calm year for Etna, it is nearly constanly active and there is rarely a full year that passes without some eruptive activity on Etna, Behncke told OurAmazingPlanet.
"We expected Etna to return to activity in this period," Behncke said. "There had been lots of premonitory signals."

Bird and Fish Deaths May be Linked to Magnetic Field Imbalance

Could the Earth's magnetic fields be causing the recent die-off of thousands of birds and fish? Scientists believe so, along with environmental imbalances.
The sudden death of thousands of blackbirds in Arkansas over the 2010-2011 New Year's holiday last weekend was newsworthy enough. Within a couple of days, hundreds of stories from all around the globe recounted similar phenomena. Not only have blackbirds been "falling out of the sky," but many species of birds,as well as reported cases of bat deaths in Arizona. In addition, there are numerous reports being gathered from around the world about massive fish die-off, and die-off of many different sea animals. What could be causing these deaths? Some researchers believe that changes in the Earth's magnetic fields are to blame.
The Earth's Magnetic Fields: What They Are and How Birds Use Them to Migrate
The Earth's magnetic field is similar to that of a bar magnet, with north and south poles. The magnetic field causes a bubble around the Earth which protects it from solar winds, asteroids, and other objects in space. Scientists believe the magnetic poles are due to electric currents that come from the Earth's core. The circulating electric current creates a dynamo effect, which is caused, in part, by the rotation of the Earth's axis. A dynamo effect is similar to what happens with an electric generator. When the magnetic field interacts with particles from solar winds, it creates what is known as the aurora borealis near the poles.
Scientists at Goethe-Universitat in Frankfurt, Germany, have discovered that a bird can see the Earth's magnetic fields through photoreceptor cells in the bird's right eye. Birds use this navigational tool to migrate north and south during the autumn and spring.

Earth Must Prepare for Close Encounter with Aliens, Say Scientists...

UN should co-ordinate plans for dealing with extraterrestrials – and we can't guarantee that aliens will be friendly.
World governments should prepare a co-ordinated action plan in case Earth is contacted by aliens, according to scientists.
They argue that a branch of the UN must be given responsibility for "supra-Earth affairs" and formulate a plan for how to deal with extraterrestrials, should they appear.
The comments are part of an extraterrestrial-themed edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A published today. In it, scientists examine all aspects of the search for extraterrestrial life, from astronomy and biology to the political and religious fallout that would result from alien contact.

Hong Kong Researchers Store Data in Bacteria

HONG KONG - The US' national archives occupy more than 800km of shelving; France's archives stretch for more than 160km of shelves, as do Britain's.
Yet a group of students at Hong Kong's Chinese University are making strides towards storing such vast amounts of information in an unexpected home: the E.coli bacterium better known as a potential source of serious food poisoning.
Biostorage - the art of storing and encrypting information in living organisms - is a young field, having existed for about a decade.
In 2007, a team at Japan's Keio University said they had successfully encoded the equation that represents Einstein's theory of relativity, E=MC2, in the DNA of a common soil bacterium.
They pointed out that because bacteria constantly reproduce, a group of the single-celled organisms could store a piece of information for thousands of years.
The group has developed a method of compressing data, splitting it into chunks and distributing it between different bacterial cells, which helps to overcome limits on storage capacity.
"Bacteria can't be hacked," points out Allen Yu, another student instructor.
"All kinds of computers are vulnerable to electrical failures or data theft. But bacteria are immune from cyber attacks. You can safeguard the information."
They are also able to 'map' the DNA so information can be easily located. This opens up the way to storing not only text, but images, music, and even video within cells. -- AFP
